Getting To Know All About Me
| I was born and raised in the quaint and peaceful town of Boerne, Texas. Having a population of only 6,124 people, Boerne has a very strong community where basically everyone is acquainted with everyone one else (and the whole town seems to makes it a point to know everyone else's business). The town also has a predominantly German heritage. As a result, a very high percentage of the population is Caucasian. I remember growing up and disliking my brown hair simply because all of my friends were blondes. I attended the Boerne public schools all the way up through ninth grade, before my parents and I decided it was time for a change. I had no idea just how culturally sheltered I had been until I started to go to school in the near by city of San Antonio. |

Before I transferred to the private, catholic school of Antonian College Preparatory (or ACP), the only Hispanics I had ever had experience with were the two dozen or so that used to be in the classes entitled "English as a Second Language". At Antonian, the majority of my friends were of Hispanic heritage, and I quickly realized that I had a poor understanding of other cultures. Now that I am a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin, I am just one of the 50,000 students that make up the melting pot of different cultures on campus. I'd like to think that I have come to respect and appreciate all different kinds of ethnic groups and cultures; however, I cannot help but feel like I am ignorant of the beliefs and traditions of those cultures unfamiliar to me. |
