RHE 309K: Teacher Development and MarketabilityRHE 309K is unique in the DRW’s process of teacher development. While required prompts exist for most courses that assistant instructors teach, RHE 309K offers instructors an opportunity to develop a course through which they may channel their research interests. Whether a graduate student pursues teaching in literary studies, comparative studies, or linguistics, he/she will always be a teacher of writing. We emphasize that the primary goal of RHE 309K is to teach students rhetorical analysis and argument. But this should not prevent instructors from constructing a course that maps their own interests and that sustains a focused discussion of those interests for an entire semester. The ability to develop a successful course, which this handbook is intended to aid, will prove invaluable as an instructor advances into the professional academic world. This unique opportunity highlights the rigorous teacher development that is unique to the graduate program at the University of Texas at Austin. Further, the experience of having taught a course that blends one’s long-term academic interests with the instruction of rhetoric and writing testifies to a graduate student’s abilities as a future academic when on the job market. - Course Description
