<1> The bot-programmer translates her or his agency into the associated subjectivity of the bot by using the programming language in which the bot is designed. By doing this, the programmer creates an interface by using a programming language which is itself an interface. Moreover, the bot could be viewed as having agency when those interacting with the bot assign it agency. Stone notes that a person "can attribute agency to anything" (Interview 6/24/94). She says, for example, that a child could believe that a matchstick looks like a witch; so for the child, who has attributed agency to an otherwise lifeless object, the matchstick has agency (Interview 6/24/94).
