In a recent edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education, Leonard Rosen complains that much
educational software in the humanities replicates this dynamic and perpetuates the problem or
role of the passive student-recipient-reader. Hypertexts -- especially when they are truly
interactive or when they involve students in the literal creation of the documents -- would seem to
be an effective means for addressing this problem.
