The Science Fiction Web Project

In order to explore the multiple interpretations and interconnections of the science fiction works we'll be reading this semester, we will be using the hypertext program Storyspace to create "webs." What is hypertext? Hypertext is nonlinear text, with multiple possible paths and connections. (We will talk more about hypertext in class.)

This is a semester-long group project. You will not be graded on your group's final product per se; instead, this project will count towards a significant part of your in-class participation grade.

There are 38 students in our class. We plan to divide you into 6 groups of 5 and 2 groups of four. We hope to finalize group selection by Friday, February 10th. By Friday, May 5th, each group should be ready to present its web to the class. In addition, on May 5th, each individual should turn in a brief written description of the work he or she did for the group.

Although we would like you to keep one master copy of your group's web on the diskette we will give you, it will be up to each group to decide how to work together. You may want to pass the diskette from member to member, so that people can work on sections at different times, or you may want to arrange to work together in the lab.

Although we have provided an example of a science fiction web, please keep in mind that our model is not the only way to structure this assignment. We will be available to offer technical assistance, and mediate disputes within groups (although we hope that won't become necessary)--but this is your project, to imagine and create as you will.
