From this excerpt of Heart of Darkness, a sense of fear and loneliness is felt. From the vivid descriptions, an ominous atmosphere is portrayed of the river as it cuts through the jungles of Africa. This description conjures up feeling of fear and despair: when a child is locked in a closet alone. In this story, the environment almost drives the narrator insane and this feeling as one person teeters on the brink of insanity can be felt from these grave descriptions of the river and the jungle.
