P1 Storyboard
Matthew Arnold uses a lot of
aestheticism in his writing, which seems to have been a popular theme in the
Victorian Era. Through his writing the popular idea at the time of the
disappearance of God is also evident. I would like to write about Matthew
Arnold and his use of imagery in exploring these themes. In terms of his inspiration,
I will explore his setting at Oxford and the places there that influenced him
as evidenced in his writing. I will draw connections between places at Oxford
and places here at UT that might inspire the same kinds of imagery and ideas or
that were inspired by such ideas. One obvious choice would be Balliol College,
Oxford which he attended and Oriel College, Oxford where he had a fellowship.
Matthew Arnold’s agnosticism is
another issue that I will address. It seems to me that agnosticism is currently
a popular stance in religious thought today. As a student in the 21st
century, there are many correlations between Arnold’s time and my own. I would
like to explore the similarities and differences between our setting and sense
of place that have affected our views of the world and of life. I have not yet
determined which pieces I will use in this exploration.
