P2 Storyboard
For the second project, I would like
to do an extension of my first project. For this project, I intend to explore
the life of Arthur Hugh Clough, close friend to Matthew Arnold and a student of
Balliol College, Oxford. I haven’t decided if the second project will be
embedded within the first project or just loosely connected by the association
of the two friends and their attendance at the same college. Arthur Hugh Clough
fits into the MOO at Balliol College (248) on his own or if I connect him
through Matthew Arnold, he will connect through the Balliol library (353),
where I first met Matthew in the first project. Various other places to connect
him are Oriel College (275) and University College (not yet in the MOO). If I
choose to embed the second project, I will connect them at the elm tree where
they used to walk together and where Matthew Arnold and I visit on my trip to
Oxford. I will incorporate his character into my story and expand the dialogue
to include him. The other option I am contemplating is a dream sequence that
would fit into the first project after I go to the elm tree where I dream that
we meet Arthur Hugh Clough there and the old friends are reunited as ghosts. It
might also be interesting to relate to Clough’s experiences in America, since
his family moved to South Carolina and he lived in the United States for six
years before returning to England to attend Oxford. Topics of interest to
explore with him would be his reasoning for resigning his fellowship at Oriel
College, Oxford on the principle that he did not wish to be ordained in the
Church of England, his radical political beliefs that led him to support the
revolution in France, his experience as professor of English at University
College Oxford, and his experiences helping his wife’s cousin, Florence
Nightingale. There may be too much interesting information to fit it all within
the first project, so I may just come up with a separate project idea for how I
meet this ghost. I will of course explore his poetry and his friendship with
Matthew Arnold, whether or not I do the project as an extension of the first or
as a separate project. Would it be okay for me to do part of it as an extension
of the first project and part of it as a completely separate project or does it
need to be one or the other?
