19 UT
Ah
yes, Yashoda took me on a brief tour through places that she considered to be
highlights
20 yashoda
We
went on a tour of the West mall, the South mall, a YCT event, a war protest,
and the state Capitol.

22 westmall
There
seemed to be many lazy students enjoying their time between class, an activity
I much approve of. Also, this is
where the YCT event took place.
Additionally, Yashoda explained to me that in the 1960s, this was the
prime location for anti-war protests.
She said that UT officials installed the planters and the fountain to
deter such gathering from taking place.
Although, I must confess, the ubiquity of pamphleteers was a little bit
off-putting.
23 southmall
Well
there wasnt much going on there when I went, but Yashoda told me all about how
protests and all sorts of events take place there today.
24 yct
Well
it was a straight pride event, and to be completely honest, I was less than
amused. I mean, could you really
blame me? My father constantly
berated me for my pure love of a man, and I eventually had to go to jail
because my lovers father judged my actions to be deviant.
It is philistines such as they who are responsible for my stay in
prison, who are responsible for separating me from my dearest loved ones. I completely lost my sense of place, my
sense of identity. Have you any idea
what it is for a writer to be separated from his home, from the places he
knows, from his fonts of inspiration?
Though, I must confess, that time in prison did help me to produce some
of the finest letters I have written.
I remember one line in particular, to dear Alfred, that seems quite
apropos at this juncture: Our love was always beautiful and noble, and if I
have been the butt of a terrible tragedy, it is because the nature of that love
has not been understood. And I was
mainly referring to my father. It
seems like the persecuted here have a whole lot more to contend with than just
irate family members.
25 protest
Well,
if one solely ruminates on aesthetics, the sight of a mob scene of over 11,000
people is simply amazing. But I
was reminded of one saying I published, that most men and women are forced to
perform parts for which they have no qualification.
26 capitol
It was
quite nice. Although all the while
I simply wondered what my father would say. He fancied himself quite the critic of architecture you
know. Not that his opinion ever mattered particularly to me, of course. After all, if I let all his words get
to me he would have ground me down into a tiny nub barely leaving an impression
above the ground.

Although, it was rather amusing when Yashoda said she and her friends
used to play capture the flag on the Capitol grounds. You see, when we played
capture the flag in my time, it involved actual guns, and death.
28 teacher
That
would have to be John Ruskin and Walter Pater, both of whom I believe you may
converse with somewhere nearby, although Im not sure where.

opportunity I had at that time to exercise my creative mettle.

37 life
Well. I was born October
16, 1854, to Sir William Wilde and Jane Francesca Elgee, living a fairly
productive yet tumultuous existence until my untimely death in November 30,
1900.
I excelled in classics and in drawing in my youth, and I eventually
earned a scholarship to the Magdalen college in Oxford. Afterwards, I wrote a lot, and got
married, and did all the responsible things, like having a lover on the side.
Of course mine was a man, but
thats beside the point.
38 parlin
Ah,
the local hall of English. I find
it quite ugly, but hope that the minds inside will suffice to provide ample
brilliance in the future. Although, I am given to understand that exam time
shall soon be approaching. So I
must offer them this tidbit: One can survive everything, nowadays, except
death, and live down everything except a good reputation.
39 most men and women
are forced to perform parts for which they have no qualification.
If you would like one more, please say "more," but I'm afraid
that's all you can get for now.
40 more
America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence
without civilization in between.
Thats it for now. I tire
momentarily of quoting myself.
41 lover
Oh you
mean Lord Alfred Bosie Douglass, Marquis of Queensberry. What a lovely lad. I met him when he was a freshman at
Oxford. We always did enjoy the purest of loves. Until his father had me put in jail of course.
42 dorian
Ah, my
most well-known work. Yashoda
informed me that even in her time its being referenced by such musical artists
as Liz Phair, who is apparently quite shocking and scandalous in her time. Naturally I must respect anyone who is
shocking or scandalous. And I am immensely
pleased with its apparent staying power.
But you know, music makes one feel so romantic, at least it always gets on ones
nerves, which is the same thing
nowadays.
If
you would like me to read from Dorian Gray, please type dorianquote.
43 dorianquote
The
only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely.
All art is quite useless.
44 shock
I used
to be teased all the bloody time for my clothing choices. They just dont understand fashion, the
damned troglodytes. They should
know that silly hats are in vogue!
And whats wrong with flowery shirts and flowing skirts on a man? If its flattering to ones figure, then
whats the problem! Although, fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that
we have to alter it every six months.
45 bye
Farewell young one. I wish
you luck in all your travails. And for a bit of parting wisdom: At twilight,
nature is not without loveliness, though perhaps its chief use is to illustrate
quotations from the poets.
46 oxford
I came
to know the Pre-Raphaelites, and learned about their concepts of
aestheticism. In fact, I may even
have become one of them. But the
some moronic tub of lard had a few poems making fun of them, and me. I got kicked out of my lodgings because
of those bloody poems! So I moved
away, and focused on my writing.
