Volcano

A friend of mine, Andrew, took this picture. He was in the Marines at the time and was called to Philippines for duty. This is Mount Pinatubo erupting.

Reading the Eiseley essay made me think of the above. We all take things for granted. Only when "the awesome powers" hits us do we start to think about how life is valuable. Nature is valuable. Central Texas is probably one of the safest places to live. I don't have to worry about a volcano erupting or an earthquake happening. When your not worried or have never experienced the trauma of losing someone to natural disaster, you let your guard down.

We depend on technology to save us from disasters (see above picture). Some people simply do not listen at all. I remember watching the news about the tornado that hit Jarrell, Texas. Plenty of people had warning about the tornado but some of them refused to listen. The disaster it have caused have been slowly repaired but nothing can repair the hurt that it have caused people.
