The Paintings of Edward Hopper

"Groundswell"

"Lighthouse"

"Rooms by the Sea"

Hopper does a neat job of playing with light and shadow in his paintings. I think the reason I like some of his paintings so much is that they remind me of vacations to Cape Cod or Martha's Vineyard when I was growing up in New England. I can imagine the warm dry wind bearing salty breezes, the activity of the waves and boat on the lapis-colored ocean, the worn wood of the all the houses, and the feeling of sand under my toes. It's a nostalgic feeling, reminding me of why I like the coast so much.
