Nature Poetry (9 September 1997)

I had never really considered nature poetry to have religious references until it was pointed out to me. The D.G. Rossetti sonnets have blatant references to god and worship throughout, easy to notice. But I went back and read some of the poetry from past classes and noticed religious references I had missed the first go-around in almost all of them. I suppose I missed them initially because it had never really occurred to me to look for them. I was always taught that writers worshipped god or nature, not both. Now I know that just isn't true.

The May Magnificat was a really neat poem. I particularly enjoyed it, not so much for the imagery, but more so for its sing-songy quality. It seems to be almost a nature chant or song. It was a marvelous poem to read aloud. My last poetry class was a contemporary American poetry class...it's nice to read something that does have some rhyme and rhythm to it again.
