our eyes look,
our bodies move

when we feel silly, we stick our butts
high in the air, drop our chins
waggle our tails
I bark, you bark

when we are hoping
ears are back, eyes look up, brows raised
you hoping for some of my sandwich
me hoping you're not sad when I'm leaving

I know thunderstorms scare you
holding one foot off the ground
like you are standing on ice
quivering
ears dropped back, darting into the closet

I pull you out, shivering
into my bed where I hold you

You know when I'm sick
staying in bed all day
walking feebily without smiling

you climb in bed with me all day
kiss me, warm my chilly body
asking for nothing
