‘One
day when I was twenty-three or twenty-four this sentence seemed to form
in my head, without my willing it, much as sentences form when we are
half-asleep, ‘Hammer your thoughts into unity’.
For days I could think of nothing else and for years I tested all I did
by that sentence [...]” William Butler Yeats (cited in Frank Tuohy, Yeats <,
1976, p.51 )

Nov. 5 Class "Ranch" Party
Friday, November 5, DINNER AT 6
(COME A LITTLE EARLIER FOR EXTRA CREDIT “PLACE” EXERCISES)
DIRECTIONS TO PIED BEAUTY “RANCH”
There are at least six ways to get out to our place from Austin.
Allow AT LEAST an hour or so to get there from Austin.
The Friday rush hour is twice as bad.
Directions to 3305 Red Bird Trail.
1.The long scenic way:
Campus to 2222 (Northland exit off Mopac). Or take 24th west (it becomes Windsor) across Exposition to the next stop sign, which is Pecos. Make a right on Pecos. Take it to its end on 35th street. Left on 35th (it becomes Old Bull Creek Road) to Mt. Bonnell Road. Right on Mt. Bonnell Road and take it to 2222. Left on 2222. Get in lane to go straight across 620 rather than turn right at 620. Cross 620 rather than turning left. You will be on Bullick Hollow road. Take this til it ends at 2769. If you make a left you go through Volente and turn right on Lime Creek Road which will take you to 1431 eventually (after many hair pin turns). This road seems to go on forever. At 1431 see below.
OR
2.The shorter scenic way:
If you turn right on 2769 you will soon start going by what used to be Cypress Creek Ranch but is now being turned into a housing development and golf course of course. Turn left on Dies Ranch Road to stay next to the development (just before the left turn, a sign says Dies Ranch Road, another sign says Austin Community College). At the stop sign at the end of the road make a left on North Anderson Mill. At the next stop sign make a right on Cypress Creek Road. Go past Cedar Park High and Middle schools and ACC to the light at Lakeline Blvd. Make a left there and go to 1431. At 1431 see below.
The ugly ways: [You may save a few minutes, except in times of heavy traffic]:
3.Take MoPac to Parmer; then go to 1431 and make a left. At 1431 see below.
4.Or go up I-35 to 1431 (Sign stays North Lake Travis and Chandler Road). At 1431 see below.
5.The obvious way: MoPac to 183, past Lakeline Mall on left and then Home Depot on the right, to Lakeline Blvd. Left on Lakeline to 1431 and turn left again. [If you miss the Lakeline turnoff you can go through Cedar Park and turn left at 1431.] At 1431 see below.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whatever way you take, get on 1431 heading north toward the Lake.
After you go through Jonestown, you are only 3 miles from Lago Vista.
In Lago Vista make a left at the light on Lohman Ford road. Go 4 Miles
down to a leaning brown sign on the right side of the road that says “LCRA/Travis County Arkansas Bend park.” Make a left at first road pass the sign: Sylvester Ford Road. Go 1 mile and right when you see a totem pole on your right (yes, the grotesque is everywhere) you are at the intersection with Red Bird Trail. You see our place on the left. Make a left and turn in the first driveway on the right, right after the “Bump” mail box, and drive under the Pied Beauty ranch sign. You made it!

Paris Review: How much rewriting do you do?
Hemingway: It depends. I rewrote the ending to A Farewell To Arms, the last page of it, thirty-nine times before I was satisfied.
Paris Review: Was there some technical problem there? What was it that stumped you?
