"The manuscript (of the memoirs) is a lengthy document, far too long to make its publication in
its entirety practicable. Consequently, I have cut roughly one-fifth of the text -- not to the detriment
of the original, I believe. the omitted passages are confined mainly to Symonds's execrable
poetry and to self-conscious nature descriptios quoted from his own letters'."
The Memoirs of John Addington Symonds, ed. Phyllis Grosskurth (London: Longmans, 1964),p.11.
I cannot say if Grosskurth is judging more of Symonds' poetry than that which she specifically cut
from this manuscript; however, there is nothing in her work which contradicts this appraisal of
Symonds's verse.
