Dragons and their close association to Christianity seems ironic since these creatures are considered evil demons and contrast greatly with the holly and divine iconography they are commonly found to accompany. These mystical creatures do provide a measure of purpose and meaning. Many times the holly images are in the presence of these figures of "motley clothe" (660). They can serve as protectors or a reminder of the evils and sins of the world. "Demons and dragons appeared in great numbers, seeming to guard the buildings of the very religion which had subdued them" (660). They also bring a measure of worldliness to the otherwise sacred places which they occupy.
