  • Bertha – crazy woman in the attic
    • Stop the wedding, represents Jane’s own fear about marriage
  • Hysteria – hysterectomy? Women and crazy things
    • When men have “hysteria” its called “shell shock”
  • Rochester à dysfunctional family role- the lost child; all goes to the older sibling – primogenitor, it is why he marries Bertha in Jamaica – Cheryl’s journal
  • Co dependence à Idolitry
    • “I have made of my husband an idol.”
    • Jane’s vision: buy a house and start a school and live by herself; she doesn’t defend it though…
    • Goal is mutual interdependence
  • Rochester changes during his and Jane’s relationship à he is bad at the interdependent relationship ideal
  • Need for love/belonging?
  • He did appreciate Jane à loves her for the right reasons à he wants her to be dependent on him
  • “Bertha” is not her real name – Rochester gave her this.  The connotation of the word
  • Rochester wanted to tell Jane Later – so she can’t leave him – he didn’t feel bad at all!  Foundation of lies.
  • Gypsy? Jane à Jane is Rochester’s superior, almost doesn’t go through with leaving him but finds the strength
  • Ben – sees Jane’s actions as a defense mechanism, baby dreams childhood to motherhood
    • Independent women vs seclude yourself
  • A little of both worlds – Jane is strong and weak
  • Be able to listen to all parts of yourself emotional vs. rational
  • Connected with Jane – surpasses emotional martyrdom
