These past two semesters, we have worked on several formal research writing assignments. Some required the resurrection of a famous person who was in some way connected to Texas, Oxford, Cambridge, Salamanca, Paris, Bologna, or Heidelberg Universities. Owen Wilson, the not-so-dead comic actor, writer, and University of Texas alumnus, entertained me for the entire semester. My first project I created a computerized replica of Mr. Wilson in the Mappa Mundi, an online virtual world. The essence of Owen Wilson was then transferred from the virtual web-bot into a satirical movie script featuring myself as Owen's would-be love interest. For extra credit, I created a Wes Anderson web-bot to keep Owen company. With my double major in RTF, it's nice to know that the ghosts of UT past can offer some creative wisdom for my future aspirations. Our second semester, we focused on reliving or creating a debate. I chose the topic Resolved: Evolutionary theory and a spiritual approach to nature are incompatible. Bruce Chapman and Ian Quigley duke it out, but as many debates go, there is no clear cut answer. |
