8  help

Hey, I understand that this may be a bit confusing. First off, read any directions that you come across.  Also, programmed responses are convenient way of getting me to talk.  Try asking about directing, or just typing in the keyword 'directing'. If you already know about that, try some of the other keywords listed to the right.

8   movies

Did you want to know what movies I’ve DIRECTED?  Or were you interested in something more particular?

9   movie

10  bottle

Bottle Rocket is what you’d call my directorial debut, not just on the big screen, on the small screen as well.  My good friend OWEN Wilson and I were both attending UT at the time, and even though we had different majors, we became good friends after meeting in a script-writing class. We ended up co-writing the original script for Bottle Rocket, which in ways parallels some experiences we had shared together.

The screenplay revolved around would-be criminals Dignan (played by Owen) and Anthony (played by Luke Wilson) and their rich friend Bob (played by Robert Musgrave), long time friends who have lofty goals of robbing a bookstore. We entered the original thirteen minute short which was filmed around Austin in the 1993 Sundance Film Festival.  It was surprising how much acclaim our little movie received, and eventually producer James L. Brooks took interest in us and he backed a feature film version of Bottle Rocket for five million dollars. Owen and I worked on making the script more in depth, and we basically used the same actors for the same characters.  The feature didn’t do too well at the box office, but I was nominated at the MTV movie awards for the best new film director, which made it easier for me to future films like RUSHMORE.

11  thank

Of course! I’m happy to oblige.

12  thanks

Of course! I’m happy to oblige.

13  UT

I attended The University of Texas in Austin in the late 80s and early 90s. I received a BA in Philosophy in 1991. This is where I met Owen Wilson, one of my best friends and creative partners.

14  Owen

Owen Wilson is my great friend that I met at UT around 1990.  He and I co-wrote our debut film, BOTTLE Rocket, and he has starred in Bottle Rocket, The Royal TENENBAUMS, and The Life AQUATIC, all films I have directed.  His brothers Luke and Andrew also have appeared in my films, and have all gone on to have successful careers in Hollywood.

15  biography

Oh, I’m glad that you’re interested!  I was born May 1st, 1969 in Houston Texas.  I attended St. Johns private high school which later was used in the filming of my film RUSHMORE.  I attended UT Austin and received a BA in philosophy.  I met actor and good friend Owen Wilson here, and I also filmed the original thirteen minute short for Bottle Rocket here.

16  trivia

           I am 6 foot 1 inches tall.

I have ended all of my movies with a slow motion shot.

I primarily use British songs from the 60s and 70s as my movies soundtracks.

I like to cast the same actors in my movies.  Frequent appearances have been made by Owen, Luke, and Andrew Wilson, Bill Murray, Kumar Pallana, and Angelica Huston.

I name many of my characters after individuals that I know, including Stephen Dignan and Brian Tenenbaum.

17  Rushmore

Even though BOTTLE Rocket didn’t do too well at the box office, my second feature film, Rushmore, got twice as much funding.  I have to attribute this film to my real fame as a director.  The film follows student Max Fischer, a C student at Rushmore private school.  Though he doesn’t do well academically, he participates in every extracurricular activity possible, often time creating his own. Max falls in love with a teacher, and during his attempts to woo her, he gets expelled and starts a feud with another Rushmore teacher.  It all culminates in [love, expulsion, {and} revolution,] which just so happens to be the tagline for the movie.  Rushmore actually was filmed at the private school I attended in Houston, St. Johns.

18  directed

Were you interested in the films I have directed?  I have directed four major motion pictures and various side projects.  My biggest success has been BOTTLE Rocket, RUSHMORE, The Royal TENENBAUMS, and The Life AQUATIC.

20  trademarks

Over the years, I have developed specific trademarks for my movies. For instance, everyone of my films involves characters wearing jumpsuits, as in Bottle Rocket where the burglars have matching outfits.  Also, I end each film in a slow motion shot and every film I make has an underwater shot of some kind or another.  I also really like the font called Futura, which is featured in almost all of my films. Keep your eye out for some of them next time you’re watching a movie I’ve directed.

21  awards

When Bottle Rocket was initially released, I won Best New Filmmaker from the MTV Movie Awards, on top of numerous awards the Bottle Rocket short received.  For the Independent Spirits Awards, I won THE Independent Spirit Award for Rushmore. I’ve been nominated for various other awards, most importantly my two Oscar nominations for the Royal Tenenbaums, including the Best Writing and Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.

22  critiques

Though I’ve only directed four major motion pictures, I have garnered quite a bit of acclaim.  My films, as far as pattern goes, are guaranteed to end up on the exclusive Criterion Collection.  The Criterion Collection features unique films that are considered classic and important contemporary films.  That being said, a lot of filmmakers included in this collection are considered pretentious.  Some critics feel that my choice of actors and direction are forced and [devoid of emotion.]  As it has been said, however, either you embrace my form of directing and absolutely love it, or you reject it completely.  However, I have been chosen by the famous director Martin Scorsese as the next Young Scorsese and he has named me his favorite director of the 1990s.
