“Hateful to me as are the gates of hell is he who, hiding one thing in his heart, utters another.”
--Achilles in the Illiad
I find that this quotation relates to the hesitancy I first felt about expressing this particular vision. Since many people have told me that it is unrealistic and a recipe for failure to try to make a like out of climbing, I’ve often been tempted to abandon this dream and turn falsely to a more secure and lucrative pursuit. Although it might feel easier at first to ignore my true dream, I would always be “hiding one thing in [my] heart” while claiming that another is my true purpose. I would be lying to myself, which I believe than lying to another. According to Achilles, I would be as hateful as the gates of hell.
