I. Mauro says there were roughly five categories of what everyone posted about
II. First category: Lizzie as a hero
-Rachel emphasizes heroic traits Lizzie showed like selflessness and moral character, quotes Bible (John 3:30) after Bump criticizes her for not having her print-out
-Amanda clarified a difference between John and Jesus in Rachel's comment
-Eric talked about how we can relate to Lizzie as a hero, though not as much of one as Celie; so he disagrees with Rachel about Lizzie eing th efirst or greatest hero we've encountered so far; he cites specifically that part of Lizzie's actions probably came from a feeling of sisterly obligation
-Emily continues this idea by saying Lizzie had a flaw in that she someitmes acted not out of selfessness but rather feelings like the obligation Eric tlaked aobut as well as a desire for recognition and gratitude after her 'heroic deeds'
III. Second category: women breaking away from gender roles
-Prianka notes that either sister oculd have been made as a brother instead, but Rossetti specifically created both characters as girls; female Christ-figure
-Garrison didn't see anything within the story that broke female gender roles, but that in writing about 2 female protagonists Rossetti was crossing some boundaries
-Megan G. agreed with Garrison that no gender roles were really crossed
IV. Third category: Laura as a hero
-Liz thought that Laura's willingness to try new things, take risks, and choose for herself what was right and wrong made her a hero
-Amanda said the fact that Laura repented and then warned others about her own sin made her a hero, much like Sir Gawain
-Law relates Laura to an Oscar Wilde quote about being willing to break away from the norm
V. Fourth category: Laura as the anti-hero
-Alex quotes from John 15:13 and the love for a sister passage as being very parallel
-Trevor relates Laura to Alice with their adventurous spirits, and also getitn ginto trouble; quotes "leaping flame" to high-lite Laura's character
VI. Fifth category: GM as warning to society
-Brad discusses GM as warning against buying into 'pre-packaged ideals'; i.e. thin kfo ryourself rather than just accepting everyone else's beliefs and morals
-Ashley (who just walked in to class) talked aobu thte sexual inuendos of GM; also claimed Rossetti as a hero for her perseverance in writing despite the unequal treatment she received with people in the Brotherhood
-Pallavi said each girl represented an extreme to be avoided; best path is moderation
VII. Mauro's final thoughts: agreed with idea of GM as a warning and guide; make sure you have someone close to you who can help keep you accountable
