QUESTIONNAIRE

HOW OFTEN DO YOU CHECK YOUR EMAIL? Every other, if not every, day

ARE YOU AWARE THE EMAIL IS NOW AN OFFICIAL MEDIUM OF COMMUNICATION FOR THE UNIVERSITY? Yes

HOME TOWN AND HIGH SCHOOL: Austin , Lyndon B Johnson High School – Liberal Arts and Science Academy

IF THIS IS NOT YOUR FIRST SEMESTER IN COLLEGE, WHERE AND WHEN DID YOU GO TO COLLEGE BEFORE? N/A

IF YOU HAD UNLIMITED RESOURCES, WHAT WOULD YOU RATHER BE DOING THAN GOING TO COLLEGE? Actually, college is exactly where I want to be – my goal in life is to stay a student for as long as I can! But I’d also enjoy traveling.

GIVEN THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO YOU AT THIS TIME, WHAT WOULD YOU RATHER BE DOING THAN GOING TO COLLEGE? Nothing!

WHOSE IDEA WAS IT FOR YOU TO GO TO COLLEGE? PRIMARILY YOURS OR YOUR PARENTS OR… A combination of both. That I would pursue a college education has always been an assumption in my family, both on my part and the part of my parents.

WHAT OTHER COLLEGE CAMPUSES HAVE YOU VISITED? The University of Chicago and Rice University .

OF THE COLLEGES TO WHICH YOU APPLIED/ADMITTED, WHICH ONES WOULD YOU HAVE PREFERRED TO PLAN II AT U.T? (I combined the questions). Swarthmore College and the University of Chicago were very appealing, but I got waitlisted at Swarthmore and I didn’t prefer the University of Chicago enough over Plan II to justify spending so much money!

WHY DID YOU SELECT PLAN II? I chose Plan II for the well-rounded foundation that it provides and for the freedom to explore academically that it allows. As someone who’s interested in most everything, I like the idea of having distribution requirements. I also like Plan II’s small class sizes, the opportunity to take honors classes in other areas, and the resources of UT as a whole.

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE AT U.T.? From my experience at UT, I expect to be challenged, not only in my academic studies but in the way I think. I hope to encounter fields of study that are new to me, to become interested in new things, and to grow as an individual.

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM PLAN II ENGLISH CLASSES? I expect to take part in thought-provoking discussions and, through such conversations, to arrive at meaningful conclusions and realizations. I expect the professors not simply to tell us what we’re supposed to realize, but to guide the discussion in a way that will help us discover it ourselves. I also expect to improve my critical thinking, writing, and discussion skills.

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM THIS PLAN II ENGLISH CLASS? In this class, I expect to be challenged more than I’m used to. Given the course goals, I believe I will probably think differently about literature and the process of writing. Additionally, through learning about things such as my strengths and weaknesses as a writer and learner, I expect to know myself better by the end of the year.

WHO RECOMMENDED THIS CLASS TO YOU? I chose it myself based on the course description from the list of World Literature classes given to us at orientation.

IF THIS SECTION OF E603 WAS NOT YOUR FIRST CHOICE, LIST YOUR ALL THE PRECEDING CHOICES BY TEACHER NAME (will not affect your grade): Woodruff

IF THIS SECTION OF E603 WAS NOT YOUR FIRST CHOICE, WHAT WOULD HAVE TO CHANGE TO MAKE IT YOUR FIRST CHOICE? I wanted to take Professor Woodruff’s class because I’d sat in on a few classes and really liked his teaching style, but after taking a closer look at the reading list and course goals, I’m happy where I am!

HAD YOU CHECKED OUT OUR COURSE WEB SITE BEFORE YOU RECEIVED THIS EMAIL? No

HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOURSELF IN TIME-MANAGEMENT (the opposite of procrastination):   VERY GOOD?   OK?    NOT TOO GOOD?......... Generally good, though sometimes I don’t leave myself time for anything but schoolwork.

INTENDED MAJORS, OCCUPATIONS, AND/OR  SUBJECTS OF INTEREST: At this point, I’m majoring in Plan II and Human Biology (with a concentration in genetics), though I’m also interested in art, architecture, art history, and psychology. I have no idea what I’d like to do for a career, though being a professor has always appealed to me.

HOW DO YOU DO YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING REQUIRED TO TAKE COURSES OUTSIDE YOUR FIELDS OF INTEREST? I think it’s great. I also believe it’s very important to have an educational foundation made up of both the hard sciences and the liberal arts. I believe it will help me to understand the world from more than one perspective and to be more versatile than I would be if I chose to limit myself to only my fields of interest.

HOW DO YOU DO YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING REQUIRED TO TAKE THIS COURSE? I think it’s important that everyone take a foundation class such as this. Personally I’m excited about taking this course and I probably would have chosen to take it even if it were not required. After an easy senior English class, frankly I’m also relieved to start a course that will require rigorous analysis, discussion, and writing.

CHECK ALL OF THE FOLLOWING AUTHORS OR GENRES YOU HAVE READ IN YOUR EDUCATION SO FAR:

X Homer  X Greek Tragedy ___The Bible  X Virgil  X Dante  X Chaucer

X  Shakespeare ___Milton  X Lewis Carroll  X Charlotte Bronte   ___ Darwin

RANK THE FOLLOWING IN ORDER OF INTEREST:

 1  PAINTING

 2  DRAWING

 5  PHOTOGRAPHY

 3  MUSIC

 4  ARCHITECTURE

 6  LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

IN WHICH COURSES, IF ANY, IN COLLEGE OR HIGH SCHOOL, HAVE YOU STUDIED THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LITERATURE AND PLACE, ARCHITECTURE, ART, OR NATURE ? In English, and a little bit in World History and European History.

DO YOU GIVE PERMISSION FOR YOUR NAME TO BE INCLUDED IN A LIST OF THE THREE OR FOUR HIGHEST GRADES IN THE CLASS, IF YOU QUALIFY (to be sent weekly only to class members)? No

HAVE YOU EVER MADE A WEB SITE? IF SO, WAS IT FOR A COURSE? Yes, I created one for a project in 9th grade.

DO YOU WANT TO MAKE ONE AS PART OF YOUR FORMAL WRITING ASSIGNMENT IN THIS CLASS? Yes, definitely.

ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH ANY VIRTUAL WORLDS IN GAMES OR ON THE INTERNET? IF SO, WHICH ONES?  Yes, The Sims!

DO YOU THINK YOU MIGHT WANT TO MAKE YOUR FORMAL WRITING ASSIGNMENT IN THIS CLASS A CONTRIBUTION TO, SAY, A VIRTUAL WORLD OF U.T.? It sounds interesting, so yes.

WHAT INTEREST, IF ANY, DO YOU HAVE IN PLACE, ARCHITECTURE, ART, OR NATURE? I find them all extremely interesting, but I love art and architecture especially.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN ABOUT TAKING THIS CLASS? My biggest concern is being able to contribute meaningfully to the discussions, as sometimes it’s difficult for me to both follow the flow of the discussion and organize my thoughts into clear comments. But hopefully with practice I’ll get better at it!
