Finally
someone I can consider a hero! Lizzie is the perfect hero in my
opinion. She is more than just a normal person, she sticks strictly to
her beliefs, and she is willing to sacrifice herself for someone she
loves. She takes a great risk when she exclaims Ò ÔGood folkÉGive me
much and manyÓ (303). Afraid that she will suffer the fate of Jeanie
and currently Laura, she faces the goblins who are Òcat-like and
rat-like,/ ratel- and wombat-like,/ Snail-paced in a hurry,/
Parrot-voiced and whistler,/ helter skelter, hurry skurry, ÉÓ (303).
Lizzie allows her life to be guided by reason, but in dire
circumstances, she allows love to take over. This trait is something
that I wish I could model my life around. However, I respect Lizzie
more as a hero than a role model because she does what I believe I
could never do. I therefore see her sacrifice as something to work
towards, not something that I necessarily believe attainable. I do not
know if I could ever achieve such selfless love and sacrifice as
Lizzie, and since she is therefore above me, she is heroic. Her ability
ÒTO fetch one [sister] if one goes astray, / To lift one if one totters
down, / TO strengthen whilst one standsÓ (309) is truly heroic.
Lizzie
seems to live in a world much like the one set forth in the Bible,
where there are constant temptations. ÒHe must increase, but I must
decreaseÓ (81) in John 3:30, the Bible specifies what Lizzie
exemplifies.
