How do they survive?

It took me a while to get my thought to start flowing at the biology pond. So I decided to watch the turtles for some time. It was quite remarkable how these creatures survive. They are not the most fit animal. They are in fact fairly slow moving creates compares to many of possible predators. Darwin’s quote describes turtle well, "In such cases, slight modifications , which in any way favoured the individuals of any species by better adapting them to their altered conditions, would tend to be preserved; and natural selection would have a free scope for the work of improvement." It seems that turtles have adapted in order for them to survive. One obvious trait to the eye is the hard exterior shell. This shell serves as a refugee or shelter for each turtle. Turtle are able to retract or burrow in their shell to escape from predator. It is an amazing and unusual phenomenon. Also while observing the turtles I saw acts of superiority. A larger turtle was able to knock a smaller turtle of a rock in order to obtain a spot to bath in the sun. The weak would fall into the water and the strong would stay. Earlier I saw a beautiful red leave. It stood out all alone among its muddy colored surrounds, with a few exceptions of fading green leaves. Its richness was so vibrant. I even asked Steven who was sitting near by if he had noticed it and he had. I watched it, waiting to see if it would flow down the small falls it hung to. I wanted to watch it swirl in the wave of the larger pond below. A part of me wash aching to pick it up and set it free but I held myself back. I began to think of the term coined by Spencer "survival of the fittest". I looked at this leave seeing it as part of evolution. It was one of the weak, which was in the process of withering away. I looked up at the leaves above still green and alive. They were the most fit. It seemed unfair. I thought to myself ,this ruby red leaf is the most beautiful leaf, and it has not been able to withstand natural selection.
