BIOLOGY PONDS The biology ponds are a wonderful sight, even if they are man made. "how fleeting are the wishes and efforts of man! How short his time! And consequently how poor will be his results, compared with those accumulated by Nature during whole geological periods." (Darwin, page 56). Darwin's quote makes sense in that man has been on earth for only a short time and his efforts may be fleeting when compared to geological time periods, but I think that the ponds are not a fleeting effort' they are in fact a world within a world, both of which happen to be made. Like a national park in our country the ponds are like a park to the UT campus. The ponds are anything but fleeting for they surrounded by and filled with the beauty of nature. Surrounded by huge oak trees that seem to stretch for the sky, the ponds bring a place of refuge for the student body. The ponds start with a little spring that bubbles up from man made rock. The water flows gently over the rock forming two miniature waterfalls where some sort of plant has begun to thrive. Then there are three successive little ponds each with minnow, small fish and turtles; the last of which holds the most creatures. The third pond houses a huge number of turtles in varying sizes that seem to love the attention from humans. These turtles climb upon several rocks that are exposed in the little pond to sun bathe; I also think they do this for our attention. These turtles, "they are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth."(Henry B., Birds and Beasts). Like the quote says these turtles are merely different from us, not below us. They seek attention, as do we. At the ponds they would pile upon one another as if trying to get people to look at them, to notice them. Come even posed like statues with their head and feet stretched as far out as possible. There's just something about these ponds and turtles that make people stop and look if even only for a few seconds. I did not see one person walk by that did not look at these turtles; I think the turtles know exactly what they're doing.Return to Discussion Forum Index
