Biology Ponds Part II Nature and humanity, civilization and the pond...I am glad that we can still combine the two in the middle of such a busy city as Austin. That probably didn't make much sense to anyone else but me, so let me rephrase that. In my opinion, it is hard to be able to have just a fantastic part of nature in a city that is repidly expanding on an everyday basis. "Science and the spirit of emulation--those are the forces that had made us what we are." (Forster 340) Here I am sitting during my class time enjoying myself outside with these phemonemal creatures while others arund me rush to class among other places they just "have to" get to. I maybe sitting here and appearing to look like I'm just relaxing and enjoying an afternoon out in the sun while watching these humorous turtles practicing their everyday routine, but I still catch myself looking at the tower to check the time. I think to myself, "Do I need to be somewhere or doing something?" We are so use to being somewhere or doing something especially with such busy lives these days that we tend to forget to just relax and watch nature take its course. I wonder why sometimes I can't be a turtle. They just sit on the rock or swim in the pong and not even notice the chaosof mankind around them. To them, life is taken a day at a time. They are never in a hurry to get anywhere or to do anything. "Wonderful that Nature can so such wild passionate work without seeming extravagant, or that she will allow poor mortals so near her while doing it." (Muir 378) To ask that of ourselves, to be like nature and to out ourselves in a life that is calm and "no longer feared being washed off" (Muir 378)Return to Discussion Forum Index
