"Life in the city is the way in which many men have experienced most directly what it means to live without God in the world." --J.H. Miller, The Disappearance of God. Although I don't particularly like to publicly discuss religion, I felt the need to comment on this quote because of the way it seemed to deny that unity is not possible in an industrialized world. I feel that saying 'living in the city is like living without God' is completely untrue. Now, when I am referring to God I do not necessarily mean the religious denotation, but more as a symbol of spirit and miracles such as nature. In that sense, God is always around no matter how developed or industrialized a city may become. Right now as I sit on campus I am in the middle of the city, but in no way am I experiencing a moment without God. These biology ponds may be small, but I can feel it all around me-the breeze, the sunshine, the grass underneath me. These may seem like small aspects of nature and the only natural things left in a developed city, but they are just as wonderful as a great park or a beautiful mountain range. They are all connected and significant to the whole. "It is the music emptiness would compose if emptiness could change into something."Return to Discussion Forum Index
