Unity

The biology pond is the rat race meeting the other side of the hedge. A man walks by with a breifcase focused in the direction he is destined. He does not notice the other side of the hedge--the biology pond. I feel lucky that I am able to extract myself from the race for an hour or two. I look around. I see a student stop on her way to class to take notice of the pond. I see her as part of the unification between the rat race and nature. She is bringing a connection between the two worlds. In THE DISAPPEARANCE OF GOD, Miller speaks of seperation of nature and man. "Only if God would return or if we could somehow reach him might our broken world be unified again." As I sit here I think about this quote and feel that this unification of nature and man has occured at The University of Texas. These broken worlds are one. They co-exist. People are able to sit by the pond and read a book. Students are able to achieve there goal and enjoy nature at the same time. Imagine gaining an education at the same time as lying in the grass and peering at the turltles every once in awhile. It is happening here, right now. At this moment I am taking part in the unity. I am working on my journal, as the wind blows my hair and I lay in the grass. The grass tickles the bottoms of my feet. The branches on the trees throw a shadow on the brightly lit green grass. I realize that opposites are pull themselves together, becoming one. I choose another quote, this time from THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HEDGE BY Forester. "Every achievement is worthless unless it is a link in the chain of development." I take this quote into the context of my enviornment, the biology pond at UT. I see the pond as a link in the chain of our development. We are students trying to achieve something greater than we came here with. We want to leave here with more experience, and education. In order for this achievement we must connect each link into a chain by creating unity.
