We are all sitting outside at the Biology ponds. It's such a warm and cool day. There are a lot of people out here today besides our class. I am so amazed how people can come out here and fall asleep. It seems so impossible. It's a beautiful day today, perfect weather for this type of field trip. I can't really think of anything to write about, I stayed up all of last night studying for a history exam. I got three hours of sleep. My body is full of caffeine, and my thoughts are distracted. We are told to take two citations from Forster and Cisneros, and incorporate them into this essay. So I will begin. Sandra Cisneros and E. M. Forster communicated two important messages in their short stories. Cisneros writes about the importance of family relationships, while Forster focuses on searching for the meaning of life. On the Other Side of the Hedge, Forster writes about a man who is searching for the meaning of his life. This man encounters many places, which confuse him. He is confused about what exactly he is put on this earth for. Forster quotes "He had wasted his breath on singing, and his strength on helping others." The main character in reference to his brother says this comment. I picked this quote because I can relate to it. I am majoring in art education, and I can't tell you how many people whom I have encountered who have told me that I should have an occupation, which pays better. I think that everyone ponders about what they want to become of their lives. I believe that you should follow your heart, and do what makes you happy. It doesn't really matter what you major in, because you're more than likely not going to keep that job for the rest of your life. In Sandra Cisneros's Four Skinny Trees, she talks about the importance of siblings, and that they are the only ones who truly understand her. She quotes, "They are the only ones who understand me." I have two brothers, and I often feel this way. Your siblings have been with you through thick and thin. Though I have probably said the worst things to my brothers, they know exactly the way my mind works, what upsets me, and what makes me happy. They understand everything I have been through, because they have been there with me. However, now that we are all in college, we have separate lives, and they are not as familiar with my ways as they used to be. It's just interesting the special relationship you can have with your siblings that you can't have with anyone else. They are there throughout all of your "best friends" and all of your relationships with other people. Sandra Cisneros is not only an interesting writer because she brings up family relationships, but also because through her writing, she opens up the minds of our society, on the issues of poverty and what it was like being raised Hispanic.Return to Discussion Forum Index
