Flynn AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF Friday, January 28, 2005 In the late 1940s, Austin architect August Watkins Harris designed a tree of life sculpture that was carved into the limestone high altar at St. Mary Cathedral downtown. The design was Harris' gift to a church that had shaped his life. He came into the world in a house on Ninth Street behind the Gothic structure, and though he married an Episcopalian, he remained devout in his Catholic faith. But not long after a sculptor completed the work, then-Bishop Louis J. Reicher had the piece covered up. Harris was heartbroken, his daughter said. He died in 1968. Not until 2003, when workers undertook a massive restoration project, did Harris' tree of life see the light of day. At 10 a.m. Saturday, when Austin Bishop Gregory Aymond celebrates a rededication Mass at the cathedral on 10th Street, Eleanor Harris believes her father will be beaming down from heaven. The $2.5 million restoration revealed other hidden treasures: two windows on either side of the altar depicting the sacred heart and a stenciled design in the narthex, or entry, both covered for decades, and a piece of wood in the choir loft with the signature of one Charles J. Armstrong, 1890, revealing the date of the loft's construction. Even more important for the Rev. Bud Roland, cathedral rector, is the intangible prize the project has yielded: a connection to long-dead faithful who lovingly built the church 130 years ago. "I have such high regard for what they did because of the work we've been involved in the last couple of years," Roland said. "It's kind of like they're there beside you saying, 'I'm glad you're taking care of this.'" Vickie Holecek moved to Austin from West in the late 1930s and fell in love with the church before it was designated a cathedral. "It just struck me," she recalled. "I just loved the way it was built. Inside it was so pretty." Holecek and her husband, Victor, who died last year, were married there in 1940. Before the decade ended, the Vatican had created a new diocese based in Austin and made St. Mary's the cathedral, sparking a series of renovations that now confound those involved with the restoration. Among other changes, church leaders had added a lower balcony in the narthex that dramatically altered the entry, replaced wooden wainscoting with marble and painted the walls a shade of green now considered unappealing by many. The current workers took on the task of making St. Mary's look as it did in the early 1900s. When they couldn't find original materials, they studied old photos and visited Galveston churches designed by St. Mary's architect Nicholas Clayton. Designers created a Spanish-style cross based on 19th-century images and attached a corpus, or body of Jesus, that had been stowed away in the rectory for decades. Workers also used two original pews another casualty of the 1940s renovations to duplicate the design for the rest of the cathedral's seats. Artists painted and stenciled walls, columns and friezes. They painstakingly dabbed 24-carat gold leaf on ornamental plaster work. Richard Miscoe, a parishioner and president of the general contracting firm for the project, oversaw everything from the replacement of the concrete roof with original slate tiles to the last-minute hoisting of the crucifix. As the hours ticked away to the rededication Mass, Miscoe kept a calm and lighthearted atmosphere. The past two years have been a grueling test of patience, he acknowledged, but they have brought joy to those involved. "There was this incredible feeling you would take home every day," he said, "knowing you're bringing a beautiful building back to its preeminence." He added, "To work for your maker, it's a real honor." As crews drilled and hammered Wednesday afternoon, the sun burst victoriously through the restored Marian window above the altar, illuminating the blue and gold of the virgin's cloak. Once dulled by protective plastic coating, stained glass depicting saints along the sides of the church shone in dazzling detail. The figures of St. Louis, King of France; St. Catherine; St. Cecilia; St. Henry, Emperor of Germany; and others seemed to emerge anew. Miscoe and Roland said they could feel the presence of past parishioners as they hurried to finish for Saturday. Aymond will be thinking of the faithful who labored for the greater glory of God as he blesses the cathedral. "What we're celebrating ... is not just this restoration but over 150 years of people who have come here to worship," Aymond said. "All those people in one way or another have led to this dedication day. It really is a family of faith who have come through a century and a half as God's people." :=>?:;< îすvgTg>TvTgTg+jhhCJOJQJUaJ%jhhCJOJQJUaJhhCJOJQJaJhh0JCJ.jhh5CJOJQJUaJ(jhh5CJOJQJUaJ(hh5B* CJOJQJaJph hh5CJ$OJQJaJ$hh5CJ0OJQJaJ0hh5CJOJQJaJhhOJQJaJ9:# $ u v - N S T i j m & 0` P@1$7$8$H$gdh !
