This was definitely one of my favorite excursions that our class took. We took a tour of the entire office including all the different rooms and small offices located on the fourth floor. Each room was unique and different and had special characteristics that made it stand apart from the rest. The paintings and carvings on the ceilings, on the walls and on the windows all had their own special meaning. They all stood individually for something that has had a profound influence on the history, shaping and meaning of our own university, The University of Texas at Austin. My favorite part of the tour was actually walking around in President Powers' office. It is a very spacious office with sitting areas, a meeting table, his own desk and work station and a wrap-around book case that make up the walls of his office. These book shelves are filled with books, old and new, pictures, awards, figurines, various signed sports balls and many other various objects of interest. I really enjoyed looking at all of his pictures. Many of them were taken with famous celebrities, well-recognized sports athletes, powerful political figures, etc. I am personal friends with the president's daughter, Annie Powers, and it was also fun to see family pictures as I recognized people that I personally knew. As I looked admiringly at all of these pictures I began to think about the enormous amount of work that came on with being president of a universty, especially such a big, presitgious and well-known one like the University of Texas at Austin. Everything including admissions, testing, academics, teachers, enrollment, extracurricular activities, athletics, sporting events, competitions, student life and so much more-the topics are endless, all in some way reflect on him. Yes, I know that there are many other important people who aid and assist the president in taking care of those things, but essentially he is the president. I was fortunate to be able to attend the University of Texas Football Banquet that was held at the Frank Erwin Center. Bill Powers was the key-note speaker and it really was a treat to get to hear him speak. He is such a neat man and you can tell that he genuinely cares about every aspect of U.T. and he loves everything about U.T.. He talked about how your experiences at the University of Texas at Austin will change your life, but he made sure to stress that these experiences were not the climax of your life, but rather the "jumpstarters" that will enable you to go out into the world and make it a better place. I remember I thought of the famous quote, "What happens here, changes the world". This is exactly what he was talking about. One of my other favorite parts of the tour was being able to go outside onto the deck that wraps around his office. The view was absolutely incredible! It was like we were in President Powers' castle and we were looking out over his kingdom. You cuold see everything from the capital all the way over to the stadium. It was a very neat experience. I learned a great deal about our school's history and was able to reflect a little about how fortunate I am to be able to go to school at a school like UT.
