But what was the inspiration behind its architectural design? Some evidence points to, of all places, the City Hall building in Camden, New Jersey. A few months ago I attended a “postcard show” sponsored by the Austin Postcard Collector’s Club. Held at a hotel and conference center in south central Austin, the event was billed as a showcase with more than a million postcards for avid collectors. I decided to take a look and see if there were any old UT postcards among them. The conference rooms were packed with vendors, many of them from outside Texas, and displayed their wares in long boxes sorted by various topics: states, cities, sports, fine artwork, holidays, space, politics, and so on. The most dedicated postcard fan could have spent the weekend here and still have only perused a sampling. Rummaging through postcards under the “Austin” tag, I discovered a few vintage cards of the University of Texas, including a rare 1907 double-card view of the forty acre campus. It’s twice the size of a usual postcard, folds in half, and on the backside is a place for the address and a (1 cent) postage stamp. You can see, from left to right, the Women’s Building, Littlefield Home (peeking out from behind the Women’s Building), Chemistry Lab, the Old Main Building, Engineering (now the Gebauer Building) and B. Hall. Look close, and you can make out one of Austin’s MoonlightTowers, standing between the Littlefield Home and Chemistry Lab. I also browsed through the New Jersey section. The UT Heritage Society is always exchanging ideas with our counterparts at Princeton University – the Princetoniana Committee - and I checked to see if there were any postcards of the Princeton campus. What I found instead were some images of the Camden, New Jersey City Hall building, and put the rest of my searches on hold. Here’s what I discovered: Does this building look familiar? The architect of our Main Building and Tower was Paul Cret. Born and raised in France, and a graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Cret immigrated to the United States. His career lead him to Philadelphia, where he oversaw the architecture school at the University of Pennsylvania. He also had a private practice, with an office on Market Street downtown. Camden, New Jersey sits directly across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, and the Camden City Hall is positioned so that it can be seen from Market Street, Philadelphia’s main east-west road from Colonial times. Is the Camden City Hall building the inspiration for our Tower? It certainly bears a striking resemblance. The clock is in the same place, the belfry is smaller that the rest of the tower with tall, vertical openings, and the corners at the top of the tower are notched, as ours is here in Austin. The city hall building is floodlit at night, and when the Philadelphia Eagles win an important game, the Camden tower glows green and white! With help from Beth Dodd and Nancy Sparrow at the Alexander Architecture Archives in Battle Hall, we’ve discovered a little more about Camden’s building. It was designed by Byron Edwards and Alfred Green, architectural partners who moved their offices from Philadelphia to Camden in 1928. Both were well-known in the area and belonged to the “T-square Club” in Philadelphia, where Paul Cret was also a member. The Camden City Hall was designed and constructed over the years 1928-1931. While we haven’t yet checked, news of the building would certainly have been in the local papers, and its construction would have been witnessed by those on Market Street. Paul Cret’s initial sketches for UT’s Main Building and Tower are dated 1931, just as the Camden City Hall was finished. More research needs to be done, but with the information we have so far, it seems likely that the development on a New Jersey skyline in the late 1920s affected the view in Austin a decade later. That the design of the Main Building was influenced by other structures shouldn’t be a suprise. It’s not unusual for architects to be inspired by ideas from colleagues or predecessors. The same is true for writers, artists and musicians. Here’s another example on the campus: Battle Hall was opened in 1910 as the first University Library. Previously, the library was housed on the first floor of the old Main Building, but a shortage of space and fire concerns prompted the Board of Regents to approve a larger, separate structure. The library was designed by Cass Gilbert, one of the most eminent architects of his time. He was responsible for the Minnesota State Capitol, the WoolworthTower in New York (for a time the world’s tallest building) and the U.S. Supreme Court Building. Battle Hall – with its Mediterranean Renaissance faчade – initiated the now familiar style for the University of Texas campus. It’s also patterned after the Boston Public Library. The Boston library was crafted by McKim, Meade and White in the 1880s, a nationally-known architecture firm for which Gilbert worked before he opened his own practice. Both buildings boast a “Renaissance Revival” design with a sloping red tile roof and a row of tall arched windows on the second floor – the locations of both main reading rooms. On the Boston library, the round medallions between the windows exhibit trade devices used by early printers and booksellers. For Battle Hall, Gilbert opted for terra cotta renderings of the signs of the zodiac, to convey the passage of time or “permanence” of the library and the knowledge contained on its bookshelves. As the University Architect, Gilbert was also asked to create a campus master plan for future building development. At the time, the campus was limited to the original forty acres, bounded by 21st and 24th Streets, Guadalupe and Speedway. Gilbert’s plan featured a wide south mall as the main entrance to the University. This made sense, as the campus was on the northern side of the city of Austin and had always faced south, toward the state capitol. Additional malls divided the campus into four quadrants for science, engineering, arts and education, and law. At the center, Gilbert envisioned a main plaza enclosed on three sides. At the head would be a new Main Building that would eventually replace the Victorian-Gothic Old Main, on the west side was the library (Battle Hall) and on the east side, in a mirror image, Gilbert placed a University Museum. Gilbert drew a sketch of the new, more classical Main Building he intended for UT. While it was never built, he must have liked the idea, as there are remarkable similarities between what he proposed for the University of Texas and one of his later creations: the U. S. Supreme Court building. The Texas Exes UT Heritage Society is organizing an architectural history committee, with its inaugural meeting scheduled for Monday, June 25th. Camden, New Jersey sits directly across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, and the Camden City Hall is positioned so that it can be seen from Market Street, Pk"l""HТHюъюй!hзIhEмB*CJOJQJphhEм!h@fЭhEмB*CJOJQJph+, !lmЕ Ж э ю ; < Э Ю № ё ^_78я№Š‹ƒ§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§l"ўƒ„СТАБзийкVW45()‡ˆЎ Џ l" H"H§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§Аа/ Ар=!А"А# $ %А https://www.texasexes.org/news/recent_news.asp?id=252#itemKEEP&AddInterest=1291s
