The Nature of Oxford

INTO CHRIST CHURCH

Alright nature is all over Christ Church. You can’t miss nature when visiting Christ Church. It’s meadow is probably 3 times the size of the entire college itself. Both Christ Church and Magdalen College have an overabundance of nature. With nature going on both inside and outside of the college walls we will start inside and work our way out to the best part of Christ Church; the Meadow. Within Christ Church’s walls lie quads and gardens. Tom Quadrangle is a quad that embodies most of Christ Church; it’s massive. The quad covers a huge area and has a fountain in the middle of it. The presence of water is also an element that is found in abundance outside of Christ Church. The next and more appealing element of nature at Christ Church has to be that of Alice’s Garden. Found just outside the walls of the cathedral, the garden is closed off to visitors but the fame of this garden creates one of the best elements of nature at Christ Church.

 CHRIST CHURCH MEADOW

Christ Church Meadow is an experience all its own. By walking around the Meadow path you can become overpowered by nature and animal-life. There are times when the nature is so overpowering that Christ Church itself is dwarfed and obscured by the trees and size of the meadow. Although the meadow no longer has longhorns grazing in the fields, the vastness of the meadow is unparalleled at Oxford. It seems to me that in present days; as walks out into the countryside have diminished due to the expansion of the city, that the meadow could serve as one of two areas at Oxford as its substitute. When walking through the meadow alone I could help but feel relaxed from the rigors of traveling and studying at Oxford.

Not only containing a incalculable diversity in plant life, the meadow is still home to various other types of life such as birds and ducks. It is this accessibility to nature that makes Christ Church amazing.

Oxford Obscured by Nature

Unfortunately Christ Church does not have any larger forms of life, I would really liked to have placed Christ Church at the top of my Oxford nature hierarchy because it had longhorns grazing in it. Nevertheless, walking around Christ Church does afford its own personal time for introspection. I have found that there is a correlation between the amount of nature present and my thoughts. As I spend more time in nature and the more of it around, the more I think. I don’t think of math problems but of life. Perhaps it is in being surrounded with life that causes one to focus on it more. I wonder if I would take advantage of the natural setting at Christ Church if I were one of its students or if I would even take notice of it. I know from past experience that if I had never taken this class that I would unconsciously spend some of my time in nature. However, now that I have a conscious awareness of nature and how it effects me I wonder if it will somehow be lost.
