The Nature of Oxford

NEW COLLEGE

New College holds an unusual place in my mind when it comes to nature. The Front Quad does not do anything special in regards to nature that any other college does not achieve. However, the College Garden a unique element to New College that sets it apart from all others. For me New College and Trinity College were a lot of like. Both having large lawns and a variety of plant life. However, the one thing that sets New College above Trinity is its Mound found in the College Garden. This mound creates a definite impression when entering into College Garden. You can’t possibly miss it with its formidable height and the steps that rise up its front as you enter into the Garden.

When I look at the Mound I imagine sitting on the bench at the top with a don learning my final lessons as a student at New College. In this dream the steps represent the many rigorous struggles and challenges of studying at Oxford.  Making it to the top in a sense becomes the symbolic heights of education that one can attain at the College. It is also like a secret hideaway, a place where you could perch yourself and people watch all day. Although the reason for the Mound could be any number of things, each college’s elements of nature create a different feeling. Each college affects its students and visitors in a variety of ways. Here at New College the mound redeems the ordinary lawns found in the College Garden. Without the mound New College’s height of nature would be the quantity of area that the College Garden sits on.
