Minutes of the Business Meeting of
The South-Central Renaissance Conference, 6 March 2009

  1.  The meeting began at 8:00 AM.
  2. The 2008 meeting minutes were approved with corrections noted.
  3. President Chris Baker expressed his thanks to the board for work done in preparation for the conference and meeting and to Brian Steele on an excellent program. Some of the points from the executive board meeting include:
    1. Current membership at 187 members; current balance at approximately $38,000.
    2. New board members nominations include Catherine Cox and Nicholas Van Maltzhan (until 2012) and Irving Kelter as the 2010 Program Chair.  The nominations were accepted and approved by the members.
    3. The next conference will be held in Corpus Christi, Texas, on March 18-21, 2010.
    4. The SCRC website (www.scrc.us.com) contains all current information, including programs and abstracts.
    5. Please note that all future SCRC correspondence, with the exception of EIRC will continue to be sent electronically.
    6. Membership input is requested concerning:
      1. A future home and editor for EIRC
      2. Affiliate societies and their role and functions within SCRC.
    7. We would encourage members to make more donations to the graduate student travel fund.
  4. Raymond-Jean Frontain noted that we need to consider first-time presenters who are not yet members of SCRC in communication matters.  Since these presenters are not included on the SCRC database and distribution list, they may not receive communications regarding the conference materials sent out by the secretary-treasurer.
  5. We are in need of a local host for 2011.  Discussion followed concerning a possible SCRC subvention to the local host to help defray costs.  No final decision was made on this matter, but the board will consider this as a possibility.  Martha Oberle will create a list of possible sites for future conferences.
  6. Frances Malpezzi discussed the future of EIRC.  Some requirements an editor and host institution should consider are release time for the editor and graduate assistant help.  Raymond-Jean Frontain suggested Texas Tech Press for the publication of the journal while SCRC providing the editor and any additional support.
  7. The affiliate organizations will meet to discuss their role and function within the SCRC, an item which will be on next year’s executive board meeting agenda.
  8. Some of the strengths noted in the program this year included the interdisciplinary nature of the papers presented.  We were reminded by various members that this is what has kept our organization vital.  As well, we noted the important presence of graduate students, and we were encouraged to donate to the graduate student travel fund.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 AM.
