Week 1 (8/31): Introductions, to each other, to the course, and to the Computer Writing Lab. Daedalus software, the class Web site and CWRL Web site . Reading Assignment: Handout from Time magazine. Writing Assignment 1. Project 1, a hypertext, assigned.
Week 2 (9/5 & 9/7): Activity: Introduction to StorySpace. Reading: Web Materials on the Cyberporn controversy
Week 3 (9/12 &9/14): Activity: Introduction to SuperCard. Rhetorical constructions of place. Reading: Outside research on Cyberporn controversy.
Week 4 (9/19 & 9/21): Activity: Work on Project 1. Reading: Fly me to the MOO, Rape in Cyberspace
Thursday: Workshop on Draft of Project 1.
Part 2: Technology and Rhetoric/Real-time conferencing, newsgroups, MOOs and MUDs
Week 5 (9/26 & 9/28): Activity: Introduction to MOOs and MUDs; creating a character, moving, and speaking. Exploring spaces on Academick and Texas OWL.
Project 1 due 9/26. Project 2, a process account in print format, assigned.
Week 6 (10/3 &10/5): Activity: Programming in MOOs and MUDs, constructing spaces, objects, and activities. Constructing process accounts.
Week 7 (10/10 & 10/12): Activity: Exploring other MOOs and MUDs. Rhetorical constructions of activity. Work on Project 2. Reading:
Workshop draft of Project 2. Turn in copy of draft.
Part 3: Technology and knowledge-making/Analysis of electronic and non-electronic discourse
Week 8 (10/17 & 10/19): Activity: Film, TBA. Reading:
Thursday: Portfolios are due. Turn in evaluation assignment, along with your midterm portfolio. Turn in both an electronic copy and one print copy. of Project 2. Project 3, an evaluation or analysis in print format, assigned.
Week 9 (10/24 & 10/26): Activity: Analyzing a film: using what we have learned about constructions of space and activity.
Week 10 (10/31 & 11/2): Activity: Analyzing other forms of discourse. Rhetorical constructions of persona and audience.
Week 11 (11/7 & 11/9): Activity: Tuesday: Workshop on draft of Project 3. Turn in copy of draft.
Part 4: Technology and Culture/The WorldWide Web
Week 12 (11/14 & 11/16): Activity: Tuesday: turn in Project 3. Introduction to Web authoring. Project 4, a collaborative project, assigned.
Week 13 (11/21): Activity: Work on final project. Proposal for Project 4 due. Happy Thanksgiving!
Week 14 (11/28 & 11/30): Activity: Work on final project. Thursday: Small group workshop on draft of final project. Turn in copy of draft.
Week 15 (12/5 & 12/7): Activity: Presentations of Final Projects. Thursday: Turn in final assignment on evaluation, together with with your final portfolio. Course evaluation survey.
