Ridley Scott's

Interpretation by: Robyn Walden

Brief Summary:

Bladeruner is set in November of 2019 in Los angeles. The Tyrell corporation had created robots identical to humans. These robots are superior in strength and ability and equal in intelligence to humans. They were used in the off world colonies as slaves. There is a bloody mutiny in the Nexus 6 team and the Replicants were declared illegal. Deckerd, played by Harrison Ford, was a Bladerunner. The Bladerunners are cops trained to kill the replicants. Six replicants have escaped from an off world colony and have come to Earth. Deckerds job is to kill, or retire them. These replicants want to live past their four year life span and they want feelings- to be more human. Rachel is a special case. Tyrell has given her memory implants and she thinks she is human. Deckerd falls in love with her and can't kill her. Bladerunner, in my opinion is a Science fiction film. Truthfully science fiction has always bored me. This film however caught me differently. The underlying theme of the Replicas wanting to live and feel and have memories, makes you think about the things we take advantage of daily. So, here's my interpretation of the first science fiction movie I actually enjoyed!

The Future?

These images of confusion in the crowded streets of the future give the idea that the future will be just that-cramped, cluttered, and dirty. People today do not take care of the environment with pollution and littering. This scene paints a depressing picture with the smog, the trash, the traffic ,and the overcrowding of the streets. Ridley Scott uses dark colors and shadows. If you notice, in the movie, nothing is clear and bright- even the plot at times. It is always wet and rainy in the movie symbolizing sadness and despair. Notice how the signs are in Japanese, but the movie is set in Los Angeles. Oriental technology is rapidly growing as we speak. These signs could symbolize the high advanced technology that the futuristic America depends on.

This image shows the overcrowding of the streets and the actual dirtiness of the people. Deckard is in the middle of a high speed chase with a gun, and the people don't seem to even notice. Is this to be the future of America?

Tyrell Corporation:

Tyrell:

Tyrell is the genius of geniuses. He created the replicas and the Nexus 6 brain . We can tell by the size of his building he is very successful. The power of technology is displayed by this corporation. People feared Tyrell and his intelligence and he liked it.

The Blimp:

"A new life awaits you in the Off-World colonies. The chance to begin again in a golden land of opportunity and adventure. New climate, recreational facilities.....absolutely free. Use your new friend as a personal body servant or a tireless field hand--the custom tailored genetically engineered humanoid replicant designed especially for your needs. So come on America, let's put our team up there...."

"This annoucement is brought to you by the Shimato Dominguez Corporation - helping America into the New World."

In the movie, the audience sees the Blimp periodically. It seems to be checking on the people watching them , or brainwashing them. The spotlight towers over them at all times and the voice advertises for the Off World Colonies. To me this is ironic that the off world colonies would even be advertised. It claims to be the place "to begin again" As if they are saying, "we messed up Earth so lets leave it and ruin another planet." The replicas sole purpose of being created was to explore space and be a slave of the off world colonies. This says something about human kind and makes a historical reference to the negro slaves of early America. People came over to the New World because the economy was so bad in Europe. It was a chance to start over on new land. Slave trade was a common thing to the people of early America. The negros were not regarded as human just as the replicants. They might argue, "but they aren't human" ;however they were created to be humans, only disposable.

Spinner:

The generic term for all flying cars in use around the year 2020. Only specially authorized people and police are licensed to operate these remarkable vehicles, which are capable of street driving, vertical lift-off, hovering and high-speed cruising. The Spinner is powered by three engines -- conventional internal combustion, jet and anti-gravity.

The Spinner is basically used in this movie as an example of the rising technology and advances this movie claims the future is sure to bring us.

The Voight-Kamff Machine:

A very advanced form of lie detector that measures contractions of the iris muscle and the presence of invisible airborne particles emitted from the body. The bellows were designed for the latter function and give the machine the menacing air of a sinister insect. The VK is used primarily by Blade Runners to determine if a suspect is truly human by measuring the degree of his empathic response through carefully worded questions and statements.

The machine took 100 questions to finally figure out that Rachel was a replicant. Tyrell took much pride in this as he watched Deckard test his prized creation.

Esper:

A high-density computer with a very powerful three-dimensional resolution capacity and a cryogenic cooling system. The police cars and Deckard's apartment contain small models which can be channeled into the large one at police headquarters. This big apparatus is a well-worn, retro- fitted part of the furniture. Among many functions, the Esper can analyze and enlarge photos, enabling investigators to search a room without being there. The January 1995 issue of NASA Tech Briefs includes a description of an Esper-like machine called Omniview.

I was amazed by this machine's ability. It's just another example of the future of technology, and how man creates machine to do things more acurately and quickly so he won't have to.

Replicants:

The replicants were designed to work for humans. They explored environments unsuitable for humans survival. The purpose of their creation was for military reasons and colonizationand exploration of space. Basically they were robot slaves that worked dangerous and hard labor. Tyrell created the Nexus 6 brain, which was most like humans. The replicants were stronger and faster than man but equaled them in intelligence. They lacked empathy and had no emotions. Nexus 6 was special. They aquired the want to live ;however Tyrell only gave them a four year life span. Replicants were forbidden from the planet Earth. The law does not consider them human so therefore they have no rights or protection.
