Diskettes:
You will need at least three 3.5 inch diskettes, or a Zip disk, labeled with your name, and you must bring them to every class. Choose name brand diskettes: Sony, Maxell, Verbatim, Iomega, Fuji, etc. They should be High Density disks unless you need to transfer work to a computer outside the lab that only reads Double-Density disks (such as a Macintosh over five years old). You will also need a disk wallet or disk box, labeled with your name, to protect your disks while you transport them. Be prepared to back up all work to a second disk, or to your IF account online. Label every disk with your name, the course number, and the name of the instructor. Other Materials: 1. An individually-funded (IF) account from the Computation Center is required to use the computers in the CWRL classroom, both during class and during lab open hours. You can sign up for an IF account at the SMF lab on the second floor of FAC (the Undergraduate Library). Make sure that your account will permit you to post web pages. 2. A free UMBS mail account, available from the Web site 3. A copy of UTSLIP (if you plan to connect to e-mail via a modem from home) and Telesys validation (note: Telesys provides dial-up, i.e. modem, access; there is a small charge)Telesys allows you access not only to email but also to such Internet services as the WorldWide Web, UTCAT, gopher, and so on) 4. A notebook for keeping notes about ongoing activities, technical information, notes for writing assignments, and sources of information for research. Bring this notebook to every class.
