Research Projects Involving
the Learning Record at University of Texas
Research and development of the
Learning Record
has been a project in the Computer
Writing and Research Lab, University of Texas at Austin, working in collaboration
with colleges and universities, K-12 schools, government agencies, and corporations.
It is currently in use in computer-based writing courses taught by faculty
and graduate student instructors in the Division of Rhetoric and Composition
at the University of Texas. Descriptions of research projects and papers

- Evaluating
Learning in Virtual Environments, a project to develop tools
and methods for evaluating learning in MOOs and MUDs, was funded
through a grant under the Computer Aided Education and Training Initiative
sponsored by DARPA. Principal Investigators for this project were M.
A. Syverson and
John Slatin. The Learning Record
CAETI project was intended to extend a successful
existing model of portfolio-based evaluation and assessment, the
Learning Record, into online environments such as MOOs and MUDs.
- Carnegie Scholars project:
This project developed the strategic plan for a database to web application
that will support a national archive of student work for research,
large-scale assessment, professional development, program evaluation,
and curricular improvements.
- College of Liberal Arts grant:
Funding to support the development of the Learning Record
web
to database architecture, pilot testing, research, and development.
This project is an open source project based on the PHP language. It
is designed to be made freely available for educational use. The
LR application is linked in the navigation menu to the left.
- Liberal Arts ITS Grant: Funding to support the development of the standalone
version of the Learning Record in FileMaker Pro
