E316 "Quiz" for the CA Classroom

Work through these procedures on your own or in groups outside of class time. The Quiz itself will not give full instructions on how to complete the tasks; use these instructions in conjunction with the information available on-line. Ask a proctor if you need help.

  1. Saving files to a disk and turning files into the network. It is crucial that you save your work regularly to prevent losing it, and that you understand the difference between saving a file to the hard drive of your computer, saving it to your disk, and saving it to my teacher folder. Instructions: Open a NEW text file or Microsoft Word file and answer the following questions: a) What environment best facilitates your learning? b) Describe an experience dealing with a new technology (technology can refer to anything from a toaster to a computer). Was it bad or good? Why? c) Describe an effective collaboration (of any kind) d) Name a favorite author. Why do you like his or her work? Include your name and your major at the top of the message. Then SAVE the file onto your DISK. When you save the file, name it XXX Quiz1 (where you type your three initials in place of the XXX or two if you don't have a middle initial). Now turn this same file into my teacher folder within the PAR classroom server. Make sure this is placed into the correct folder entitled "Quizzes."

  2. Copying all or part of a file into another file. This process will enable you to save successive drafts of your longer papers, and to minimize work by re-using what you've already typed. Instructions: Open the XXX Quiz 1 file from your disk. Now open another NEW text or MS Word window. Type your name and place of birth in this new file and save it onto your disk as XXX Quiz 2 (where you type your three initials in place of the XXX). Notice that both files are open at the same time. Now SELECT the text in the XXX Quiz 1 file (note you have several ways of accomplishing this), COPY it, then PASTE that text into the XXX Quiz 2 file. Now SAVE the Quiz 2 file as a RTF (Rich Text Format) document. Note the difference between the commands "Save" and "Save As...". Now turn this file (Quiz 2) into my teacher folder in the "Quizzes" folder.

  3. Copying all or part of a file into a mail message. I might ask you to complete a written assignment outside of class and email your classmates, after which you would examine and compare each other's work to your own. Instructions: Open Eudora (or pine if you're using another mail client). Send the message to me (tonyab@mail.utexas.edu) with your e-mail address. Practice attaching a document, by selecting "attach a document" under the message menu. Select quiz 2 and attach it, then mail the message to me. After you have received confirmation from me, send the contents of your file (not as an attached document) to the class list-serv E316K-Browning@lists.cwrl.utexas.edu. (You open a file-either Quiz 1 or 2-select the text in the message, then copy, then paste it into the message window. Now send the mail message, which will be mailed to the entire class).

  4. Practicing data format conversion. Scan a picture of yourself (Here's a link to the scanning guide). This picture must be 320 X 240 pixels, and 72 dpi. It must be saved in three different formats: TIFF, PICT and GIF. Name the file lastname and add the suffix w/the pertinent format type. For example, my file name would be browning.gif. Create a folder called BIO and place these images inside. Copy this folder & files to your folder inside my teacher folder on Parlin Classroom volume.
We will go over data formats in class on Wed., 1/22.

  5. Printing files. This course will be organized around the assumption that most files will NOT be printed. However, if along the way you find a particular document you will need to access often and easily (such as our syllabus), you may print it. Please try to print sparingly overall.
