Modernist Discussion
This forum will serve as a space where we discuss our interpretations of the reading assignments.
You may respond to my thread or start a new one based on the reading and the in-class presentations.

This forum will serve as a discussion space for our recent
reading of various modernists. Either start a new thread or
respond to an already existing thread (you must post at least one response for each question):
-
H.D.'s poem "Helen" begins
All Greece hates
the still eyes in the white face,
the lustre as of olives
where she stands,
and the white hands.
How does the use of a historical
figure work in this poem? How does HD subvert typical readings of Helen of Troy? Compare this poem to
Edgar Allan Poe's "To Helen" on pg. 646.
- Discuss the different introductions to Cane. What is
Frank implying when he writes "for Toomer is finally a poet in prose"? What stereotypes are present in Frank's
introduction, even though he is a "patron" of the Harlem Renaissance? How does Turner's biographical information about Toomer
serve his introduction? Turner characterized Cane as "a song for an era that was ending." Based on what you've read
so far, do you agree or disagree?
