My book (s) of the week choice:

Designing Visual Interfaces: Communication Oriented Techniques

It's by Kevin Mullett and Darrell K. Sano. SunSoft Press. Single copies can be ordered at (800) USE-SUNX. You can get a SunSoft Press catalog at sunsoftpress@Sun.com.

I highly recommend this book if you're interested in GUIs or interface design in general. They provide clear examples as well as explanations of their theory and a color insert is included (very Tufte-like). I don't agree with all their choices, but overall the book is an excellent investment.

If you take only one idea away from this book, let this be the one. Problem solving and communication, not personal expression, is the key to effective visual design for graphical user interfaces. (247)
