Philosophical Implications of Artificial Intelligence

Contemporary philosophers have found that the concepts and technology of artificial intelligence provide useful ways to test theories fo knowledge and reason. The major philosophical question regarding artificial intelligence is whether or not a machine can behave as a human in the decision making process (an intelligent entity). This idea has many ramifications regarding how the mind works and what is intelligence.

When analyzing how humans make decisions, one is analyzing the fundamental constructs of the mind. In order to do this, one must consider what it is to be a human being

The Turing tests presents the question that if a computer can behave as a human being, then the machine could be considered intelligent. Moreover, with intelligence, questions of consciousness arise: Disembodied AI has been extensively studied since the adven of the digital computer.

  • An Overview

As explained previously in the discussion of expert systems. The concepts of an inteligent computer can have many benefis for society; however, many contemporary science fiction writers construct future worlds in which an artificial intelligence has taken over. This point will be further explained in our fiction section, but one must consider the positive and negative consequences of a machine with intelligence.
