Patrick Benavente Cadigan-Response
I've read Sterling and Shiner's take of cyberpunk and Cadigan's in
indeed the one most accurately and unobnoxiously stated. Of course,
her view is presented from a different perspective than other writers,
but this perspective really "puts things into perspective." Whereas the
other writers did more of a criticism of today's cyberpunk fiction, Cadigan
really addressed the question of cyberpunk current biological status. Her
answer turns the question upside down and helped me
understand which cyberpunk
writers enjoy flattering themselves and which really seek to honestly speak to
their readers. When I first heard the declaration "cyberpunk is dead," I thought
to myself - "no, that's not quite right." I wasn't sure how to quite articulate
my uneasiness of that statement, but Cadigan has done a fine job of helping me
unmuddle my thoughts. Writing movements never die. Ever since fiction began,
writing has evolved from movement to movement; and to declare a movement dead
is to deny that movement's reality manifested by the real events it occurred around.
