Hello. Our names are Yvette Flores and Tim Gibbons, and we are students in Tonya Browning's Computer Assisted E306 at the
University of Texas at Austin.
We chose illegal immigration as the topic for our home page because it is a major problem facing the United States today.
The number of illegal immigrants coming into the U.S. from Mexico has reached such
a level that it has had dramatic effects. For years, the border states of this nation have faced a steady increase
in the costs they are forced to pay for providing benefits to illegal immigrants. The burden that
they have placed on the national, state, and local governments has led to economic and social problems.
In response to the huge economic burden that was placed on the states, different
methods of control have been put forth as possible solutions. The first method is one of prevention. It has already been
put into action by the Attorney General Janet Reno. She increased funding to the border patrol units of El Paso and San Diego
and has had positive results. The second method is more controversial. This method deals with the denial of public benefits
to illegal immigrants. This method has been used in California with Proposition 187. Many of the people who favor this act
feel it is long overdue and favor its extreme measures. The people who are against the passing of this proposition feel it is too
harsh and that its negative consequences outweigh any benefits.
There are both negative and positive results to stemming the flow of illegal immigration. Negative results can be seen in the medical community as well as having an effect on the labor force. Positive results could include the freeing up of public assistance as well as a reduction of social and economic strain in some communities with a major illegal immigration problem.
