Rhetorical Analysis Topic Proposal

Your topic proposal should describe the webpage you choose to write about. It should mention what sort of argument it is, explain its rhetorical purpose, and identify its intended audience or invoked audience. The proposal should state your claim about the effectiveness of the appeals and rhetorical strategies within the text, and briefly mention the reasons you will use to support this claim.

Follow this format:

1.  SOURCE: www.cocacola.com

2.  TEXT:  Coke homepage

3.  AUDIENCE: Readers in their teens through late thirties.  Middle to upper middle class.  Both sexes.

4.  MY CLAIM RE: WEBPAGE'S EFFECTIVENESS: The webpage is effective because it creates an image that users can admire.  The page focuses not on the product--with which everyone is already familiar--but on the personality of the brand.  The use of animation and sound enhances the product's ethos by making it seem very modern and up-to-date; unlike similar webpages, moreover, Coke uses just enough animation to make the point--it doesn't beat you over the head with obnoxious visual or sound effects.  The use of shades of red makes the page warm and inviting and also bold and modern, while also reminding the viewer of Coke's trademark image.  The uncluttered nature of the design makes it easy to navigate and also allows Coke to focus on making one strong message instead of many, diffuse claims. On the whole, the page is effective because it is easy to navigate, uncluttered, and successfully creates a modern ethos for the product.
