Daily Assignments
- For Wednesday, 27 February
- Complete peer responses using Microsoft Word Commenting, following the directions on the peer response sheet. You can find instructions for setting up Microsoft Word Commenting on your computer by going to: http://wwwnt.cwrl.utexas.edu/web/teaching.cfm?page=commenting. Use FTP to transfer the peer response.
- For Monday, 11 February
- Please read "Just War Conduct" by Richard Regan, which is on reserve in the PCL. Please also read from the Afghanistan Packet: Maps, Transcripts, and Images. You may also want to start looking at the other sections, but please do not do so prior to completing the following response, which should be posted to the Main Discussion Forum no later than 10:00 pm, Sunday:
Discuss your intitial impressions of the war against terrorism being fought in Afghanistan in terms of Regan's discussion of discrimination and proportionality. How do Bush's, Blair's, and bin Laden's speeches hint at the type of war they are going to fight? Do you see the three men employing language that we have been looking at? How, andto what effect? How do the images work with or against what the leaders are saying?
Please download and install WS_FTP onto your computer, following the following directions carefully. Selecting this link will ask you where you would like to save the file. I recommend saving it to your "My Downloaded Files" folder, which is most likely located in your computer's C: drive. Alternately, you can just download it to the Desktop. Once you have downloaded the file, exit all applications that are currently open. Double click on the WS_FTPLE icon -- it looks like this: -- and follow the instructions. When the instructions ask you if you are a student at a university, hit the Yes button. Instructions for using the WS_FTP application can be found at http://www.utexas.edu/cc/training/handouts/wsftp.html/. You are free to look at them, but they may be confusing because we have yet to discuss many of the features. Note: After class on 11 February, you will no longer be able to download the program; because of its size I must take it off the web page. Please make sure you download it before this time.
- For Friday, 8 February
- Complete peer responses using Microsoft Word Commenting, following the directions on the peer response sheet. You can find instructions for setting up Microsoft Word Commenting on your computer by going to: http://wwwnt.cwrl.utexas.edu/web/teaching.cfm?page=commenting. Email a copy of the peer responses to yourself. Remember, the more you put in to the peer response, the more your peer and you will get out of it. I personally think peer responses are just as, if not more, important for the responder than the respondee. If you have any questions, please email me.
- For Wednesday, 6 February
- Complete a rough draft of essay 1. Please put a copy of your essay on the ZIP disk you were required to buy for class. Please note that PC formatted ZIP disks can be used in Macs -- the computers we have in class -- but Mac formtted zip disks can not be used in PCs. We do not have floppy drives in our classroom. Please also email a copy of your essay to yourself as an attachment -- not copied and pasted into the email message -- as second means of back-up. You must use only Microsoft Word when writing your essays; we do not have Word Perfect in the classroom. You can get a copy of Word (Microsoft Office, actually) from the Computer Store (located at VRC 2.102A, 475-6550) for $5.00, which is an excellent price. Neither forgetteing your disk nor not having a ZIP disk nor not eamiling the essay to yourself with be accepted as excuses.
For Friday, but get started early because its a confusing process. In order to aleviate the need to use ZIP disks, which will save lots of time, you will need to get an ACITS account validated for a UNIX system. Remembers the words ACITS and UNIX because you will be asked them when you set up the account You do not need to know what they mean or what they do). To open an account, or to get an existing
one validated for one of these machines, go to the Help Desk in Varsity Center. Bring your UT ID and your IF number and password. For more information, call the Help Desk at 475-9400.
- For Monday, 28 January
Friday, 25 January
- Log in to the Learning Record Online and click around in it, getting a feel for what it can do for you and
what you can do with it. Complete Parts A1 and A2, and your first two Observations.
You can see sample Parts A1 and A2 at
http://www.cwrl.utexas.edu/~syverson/olr/exemplars/A.html. Remember, these are samples -- and most of them are of a lower quality than we will be striving for in this couse. If you have any questions about the LRO assignment, please post them directly to the Learning Record Forum; do not email them to me. I will check the forum throughout the weekend and will respond immediately. Before posting your question, check to see if a classmate has asked a similar question.
Please read the following: Coates, "The Just War" (97 - 119); Tuchman, "Let the Last Man on the Right Brush the Channel with His Sleeve" (17 - 27), "Outbreak" (71 - 72).
Post an answer to the following question at the Main Discussion Forum: Where would you located your own war philosophy? Why? Responses should be equivalent to
at least one page double spaced. Please respond no later than 10:00pm Sunday.
Have a great weekend.
- For Wednesday, 23 January
- Your IF Numbers are due. IF Numbers are needed so you can log in to the class computers starting the third week. Please go to http://www.utexas.edu/cc/account/ and follow the online directions; they are easy and the least time consuming. You will need to know your UT EID in order to log into the system. When registering for your IF number, write down the number and your password and keep them in a safe place and you MUST sign up for Print Relay Service (PRS) and CCWF UNIX Services (HPW); if you do not, you will not be able to hand in essays in this course.
Please read Miller, pages 12 - 15 "Terms for Interpretations of Conflict" and Coates, "Introduction." Both are on reserve in the PCL. The Reserves Desk is just to the left of the Circulation desk. When you walk in it will be on your left. In please postthe following response to the reading to the Main Discussion Forum:
What do Miller and Coates mean when they write about ethics in war? How can people apply ethical standards to war? How are Miller and Coates trying to apply ethical standards to war? Do you think its realistically possible?
Post your response by 10:00pm, Tuesday -- and follow the instructions on the Forum. Make sure you bring copies of the reading to class on Wednesday. Enjoy your day off.
- For Monday, 21 January
- Please complete a Writing Sample by 10:00pm Sunday, 20 January. Complete your Writing Sample using Microsoft Word and then copy and paste it in the Main Discussion Forum. Take no more than 60 minutes to complete the sample. This will not be graded in any way; it is just a way for me to gage your writing at this early point in the semester. Take your time, proof read your work, and think through all of the issues.
Have a great weekend.
- For Friday, 18 January
- Please make sure you have all the required materials listed on the syllabus. Sign up on the Class Contact Page. Read computer classroom etiquette
Read through the Learning Record information web site -- especially the pages for students -- and come up with 5 written questions you have about the Learning Record process. Post your questions to the course Learning Record Discussion Forurm (there is a forum on the Learning Record site; please do not use that one).
Also read the Rhetoric and Composition policy on Plagiarism (6.1 - 6.3), and print out and sign the Scholastic Responsibility Agreement (please use this link; the one on the web page is broken).
If you do not already have a UT email account, you are required to have one for this course. You can register for UT email by using Telnet at telnet://mail.utexas.edu and by following the instructions (if your computer has a Telnet connection; most UT computers do), or by following the other instructions at http://www.utexas.edu/cc/umbs/steps/. You are required to have a UT email account because yahoo, hotmail, and other web-based emails do not have the ability to handle the size of the attachment files we will be using in the course.
